The Thrill of African Music

I grew up on the passionate appreciation of the Yoruba culture for music and its various rhythms. Through this page it’s hoped that the influence of the rhythm and pace of the music of some cultures of West Africa on the music world would be appreciated even more.

Sunny Ade
Exponent of Juju Music. Sunny powerfully dominated Juju music scene with Ebenezer Obey in Nigeria between the late 60s and 90s.
This clip is the ending part of the Kiti-kiti album from the late 70s. The
change of beat and sustained slow rhythm must take folks who grew up in those years wayyy back.
Sunny and Obey, some say, oppressively dominated the juju scene but left fans well-hydrated!
From FESTAC77, this brief clip illustrates Sunny’s expertise in the delivery of perfectly danceable rhythm with originally traditional flair. Here’s “Aihan Igo Lai” (language unknown)
